vaginismus

Vaginismus is a female sexual disorder in which a woman experiences pain during intercourse as a result of the pelvic floor muscles involuntarily contracting.  It is the number one cause of unconsummated and sexless marriages.

Symptoms can include:

  • Burning, stinging, or pain with penetration

  • Pain with insertion of a tampon or speculum

The onset of vaginismus varies with some women experiencing it when they become sexually active and others experiencing it after having comfortable sex for years.
